According to the Department of Environmental Quality, all generators of waste, except households, are responsible for determining if their waste is hazardous. A hazardous waste can either be included on specific lists or exhibit hazardous characteristics. Below are descriptions of the three classifications of hazardous waste generators:
1. Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG)
An entity, other than a household, which generates less that a total of 220 lbs./month of non-acute hazardous waste, and does not accumulate more than 2,200 pounds. While these generators can legally dispose of their electronic equipment in landfills or incinerators, recycling is highly recommended due to the toxicity of e-waste when improperly disposed of.
2. Small Quantity Generator
Generates between 220 and 2200 lbs./month of non-acute hazardous waste, but does not accumulate more than 13,200 pounds.
3. Large Quantity Generator
Generates over 2200 pounds/month of non-acute hazardous waste or more than 2.2 pounds of acute hazardous waste.
