Public Bathing Beach Monitoring The Western Upper Peninsula District Health Department will be monitoring the water quality at local public bathing beaches during the summer months. Funding for this project was made available through a grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. With all of the upcoming events this summer, including the Midwest Territorial Rendezvous in Ontonagon, school reunions, and many local festivals, individuals and organizations planning temporary food fundraisers and temporary campgrounds are reminded to apply early for their license Click the More Info button to go to theMichigan’s Food Law of 2000 requires a temporary food service license to prepare and serve food to the public, including festivals, community fundraisers, public picnics, fairs, church dinners, etc. Some of the items of concern include safe potable water, hand washing, food cooking and holding temperatures, food worker hygiene and ware-washing. A temporary food service license must be obtained for each event and is valid for up to 14 consecutive days. The license fee is $33.00, or $30.00 for non-profit organizations. Click the More Info buton to see the Temporary Food With the increased number of tourists visiting our area this summer, additional short-term camping facilities may be needed. Michigan’s Public Health Code requires a license to operate a temporary campground, including a temporary expansion of an existing annually licensed c ampground. License and inspection fees are based on the number of proposed camp sites. Temporary campgrounds must have adequate potable water, sanitary privies, garbage storage and collection, and camp sites with adequate space and drainage.Both temporary food and campground licenses should be applied for at least 14 days prior to the event. An inspection will be conducted and the license issued on the day of the event. License applications and information about the requirements are available at the Health Department offices or on-line at www.wupdhd.org.
